Rumiko Takahashi Autograph Cards
In Inuyasha TCG
|
April 22, 2005
Score
Entertainment has announced that it will include Rumiko Takahashi
autograph cards in its Inuyasha TCG beginning with Yokai,
the fourth set, which streets August 28th. Takahashi will sign
stickers that will be placed on one-of-one cards, each of which
will feature alternative art on a specially designed template.
Takahashi is
one of the most prominent manga-ka in Japan and the creator of
Ranma 1/2, Maison Ikkoku, and Mermaid Saga:
Forest in addition to Inuyasha and other properties. Her
signature has rarely been seen in Japan, and no other
Takahashi-autographed product has ever been released in North
America. Her appearance at the San Diego Comic-Con (including a
signing at the Capital City Distribution booth) in the 90s caused
a sensation, and her reputation and popularity have only increased
since then.
The first autographed card will be given away at the Inuyasha
Shikon Jewel World Championship tournament at Anime Expo in
Anaheim on July 2nd.

Upper Deck Expands Organized Play
For 2005
|
December 07, 2004
Upper Deck is
planning a new program of launch events in hobby stores in 2005.
The new program, called "Release Celebrations," is currently slated
to start in May, 2005 for both Yu Gi Oh and Versus system (Marvel
and DC) products. Release Celebrations will run at the local hobby
store level as new products release. Upper Deck will provide
promotional kits to support the release with light organized play as
an introduction to the product.
According to
Upper Deck Organized Play Program Manager Scott Elliott, Release
Celebrations "...will be available to a much larger cross-section of
hobby stores" than the current Sneak Preview events. Sneak Previews
are run by Upper Deck Premier event organizers, some of whom are
retailers, at a variety of locations, some of which are stores.
These are typically run one per market for a new release, for a
total of 40 to 50 simultaneous events nationwide. Release
Celebrations are expected to be held simultaneously at thousands of
hobby stores.
Sneak Preview
events have new product available before the formal street date.
According to Elliott, Release Celebrations will also have early
product. "The plan is to stack the shipping so that these folks
would receive priority in getting theirs first," he said of stores
holding Release Celebrations. Release Celebration event support
will only be available to retailers buying directly from Upper
Deck. According to Elliott, Upper Deck plans an outreach program at
the upcoming GAMA Trade Show in March to recruit as many retailers
for the program as possible.
Upper Deck
recently launched another organized play program, the Shonen Jump Yu
Gi Oh TCG Championship Series. The first event was held last
weekend at GenCon SoCal. These events are jointly sponsored by
Upper Deck, Shonen Jump, and Konami, and run by Upper Deck Premier
tournament organizers. They'll feature prizes such as laptop
computers, "slim" Playstation consoles, Nintendo Gameboy DS units,
and so on, down to booster packs for lower-ranked winners. Special
promo cards will be given away, such as "Cyber-Stein," which was a
Japanese-only card until it was first given away at the GenCon
event. It hasn't been decided whether the promo cards will
subsequently be included in Shonen Jump magazine, as some
earlier Yu Gi Oh promo cards have been (see "Exclusive
Yu Gi Oh TCG Card in December Shonen Jump").
Up to 2,000
Shonen Jump Yu Gi Oh events will be held over the next year,
primarily at large conventions, or at Upper Deck weekends where
other major organized play events are also taking place.
A number of other
Upper Deck organized play programs will continue in 2005. The Yu Gi
Oh Duelist League will continue at over 6,000 Wal-Mart, Toys R Us,
and Books-a-Million stores. This is a new player acquisition
program, designed to be the first contact with Yu Gi Oh organized
play for a new player. Prize support and other features are
different for the Duelist League than the Hobby League program.
Upper Deck's
Hobby League program will continue in 2005 for both Yu Gi Oh and the
Versus System. About 1000 hobby stores are currently participating
in the Yu Gi Oh Hobby League, and about 700 in the Versus League.
Upper Deck Retail Organized Play Manager described the programs.
"With these league programs, we're providing an opportunity for
retailers, regardless of their size, or their revenue, or their
location, to have a value through these games and through these
programs that their players aren't going to get anywhere else," he
said. Hobby retailers pay a $20 licensing fee for each kit they
receive.
The Vs. System
Hobby League has a Hobby Reward Sweepstakes for both retailers and
players. The 2004 winning retailer, Henry H. Buchanan of Junior's
Comics in
Austin,
Texas, received a $10,000 gift
card to the home improvement chain of his choice. His win was in
the first League kit his store had ever received. $12,000 in
Alienware computers were given to players in 2004. Both sweepstakes
programs will continue for the Versus System in 2005.
Upper Deck also
runs Regional and National championships for its Yu Gi Oh TCG.
For the Vs.
System, Upper Deck will run Pro Circuit Qualifiers in hundreds of
cities, leading into $10,000 Championship tournaments, and national
champioinships. The 2004 Pro Circuit Championship was held at
GenCon SoCal last weekend -- the winner got a check for $45,000, and
over $256,000 in prizes was awarded in all at the event. |

National Games Week is November 21-27,
2004
BROOMFIELD, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 19, 2004--Games industry
professionals throughout the country have joined together to promote
the educational, social and entertainment value of playing
non-electronic games. During National Games Week(TM), November
21-27, 2004, people across the country will be encouraged to turn
off the television, step away from the computer and play a game. Any
sort of game will do, such as board games, card games, roleplaying
games, miniatures games and family and party games.
During the past decade, there has been a boom in non-electronic
games. What was once considered a niche market has become
mainstream. Board games have already set a sixth straight annual
sales record, even before the key Christmas season. The art of game
design and appearance has grown incredibly. There is a vast variety
of games that adults and kids can play together, and all enjoy the
shared experience of a smart game, some competition and a lot of
interaction. The industry has evolved to include 40,000 products
with over $5 billion in sales expected for 2004(a). Many of the
games are available through specialty stores rather than the mass
market.
"Millions of game enthusiasts already know that games are
positive, social entertainment." said Mark Simmons, the founder of
National Games Week and publisher of Games Quarterly(TM), "We are
encouraging individuals, schools, game stores, churches, and anyone
else to hold a Games Day event during National Games Week,
showcasing the fun of game for family and friends."
Thousands of Games Day Hosts have been provided with the tools to
make a fun, successful event -- posters, invitation cards, National
Games Week Official U.S. postage stamps, information for educators,
even promotional copies of games, via the web site
www.nationalgamesweek.net.
Key sponsors for this year include Wizards of the Coast, makers
of Magic The Gathering(TM)and Dungeons & Dragons(TM); Eagle Games,
publisher the new Bootleggers(TM); Pokemon USA, organizers of huge
Pokemon(TM) Trading Card Game events; Rio Grande Games, whose title
Carcassonne won Best Game of the Year in Germany and the USA; and
Mayfair Games, whose flagship game Settlers of Catan has won the
same two awards and produced an entire product line. (a) According

The game
market began a comeback in the third quarter after declines
in most game categories in the first half of the year, ICv2
reports in the ICv2 Retailer Guide to Games #6, which
reaches retailers this week. While there are still no
mega-hits with the heat of the early days of Yu-Gi-Oh!,
WizKids Clix line, or Pokemon, there are a
number of strong product lines selling at solid
levels. Store counts are also down, which is eliminating
some competition and making the remaining stores healthier.
ICv2
also reports on the Top Ten Collectable Card Game, Miniature

issue, as well as providing market information on a host of
other properties. Here are the top three properties in each

NINTENDO PLANS ON TV SUPPORT FOR POKEMON.
|
August 25, 2004
COURTESY OF ICV2.COM
Nintendo is
planning over $1 million in television, print, and public
relations marketing support for the next Pokemon TCG
release, Fire Red and Leaf Green, due out August 30th.
According to Nintendo National Sales Manager Dean Irwin, despite
printing more of this release than any previous Nintendo
Pokemon TCG release, the product is nearly sold
out from Nintendo before release.
The new TCG
release, in starter decks and booster packs, will be released a
week and a half before the release of the Fire Red and
Leaf Green Pokemon GBA videogames. The videogames
will get $5 million in national TV, radio, and print support
from Nintendo.
The heavy
marketing support for the TCG, as well as coupling TCG releases
with videogame releases (which receive even more advertising
muscle), and strong organized play support (on which Nintendo
has spent over $1 million in the last year) are some of the
reasons for the strong sales of the Pokemon TCG despite
its age. Irwin said he believes Pokemon is a very
solid #2 in mass (behind only Yu-Gi-Oh!), and #3 over-all
(behind Magic in the hobby channel).
Several other
TCG releases are planned before the end of 2004. Next up are
the Pokemon Deck Tins, set for release on October 25th.
Four different tins, each with one of four random special cards,
as well as a sticker set matching the tin art, will each retail
for $9.99.
On November
8th, an as-yet-unnamed Pokemon TCG set will be released,
the seventh in the EX series. The characters in the set will be
based on Fire Red and Leaf Green.
And on November 15th, the
EX Battle Stadium will street. Shipped in a box, each
Stadium will include two sixty-card decks, as well as two
10-card "sideboard" decks. Also included will be special rules
to help players build strategic decks. MSRP will be $21.99.
Nintendo is looking for new non-videogame
products to market in the States. According to Irwin, the
search is looking both at games and at other "impulse
collectable items." They could be based either on Nintendo, or
on non-Nintendo intellectual property. Irwin said of the
search, "When the next Beanie Baby happens, we want to be part
of it." |

LOTR HOLDING UP BETTER
THAN EXPECTED.
COURTESY OF ICV2.COM
|
August 09, 2004
According to
Decipher VP Sales and Marketing Scott Gaeta, sales on the Decipher
Lord of the Rings Trading Card Game have held up better
than some expected after the release of the last movie in 2003.
The Siege of Gondor expansion, released in March, sold
better than Battle of Helm's Deep, the comparable product
released in March of 2003, according to Gaeta. And orders for the
just-released Mount Doom expansion are running ahead of
those for Siege of Gondor, and on a par with the year-ago
expansion.
The mechanics
for the LOTR TCG will change slightly in Decipher's
November release, Shadows, allowing for more alternate
ring-bearers and more unpredictability in outcomes. Decipher will
also continue to use Weta images of literary characters that
didn't appear in the films in the future.
Decipher
expects its dot Hack TCG to benefit from increasing
exposure in other media, including the release of Legend of the
Twilight, the second anime series, on Cartoon Netowrk. Next
year will see a new dot Hack videogame and new anime
releases on DVD.
A Reflections release is planned for Decipher's Star
Trek TCG in December, which like Reflections sets for
other games will include some new rares and a selection of cards
from past sets. Strange New Worlds, planned for April,
2005, will include more Enterprise crew members and new aliens.

YU-GI-WHO?.......DUEL
MASTERS HAS REPLACED THE KING OF GAMES.
6/28/04
ARE YOU A KAIJUDO MASTER? YOU ARE
GONNA WANT TO BE AFTER YOU PLAY DUEL MASTERS: SEMPAI LEGENDS FOR
THE GAMEBOY ADVANCE.
THE GAME: THE PREMISE OF THE
GAME IS OF COURSE PLAYING THE CARD GAME. YOU TAKE ON THE ROLL OF A
"WANT TO BE KAIJUDO MASTER" OF WHOSE BIRTHDAY IT IS. AFTER YOU
VISIT A FEW THINGS AND COME BACK TO YOUR HOUSE YOU REALIZE THAT YOUR
PARENTS DIDN'T FORGET YOUR BIRTHDAY LIKE YOU THOUGHT BUT, ARRANGED A
SURPRISE PARTY IN YOUR HONOR. THAT'S WHERE YOU RECEIVE YOUR GIFTS
AND YOU FIND OUT THAT A BURGLAR BREAKS INTO YOUR HOUSE AND STEALS THEM.
THATS WHERE YOUR ADVENTURE BEGINS. YOU HAVE TO FIND YOUR CARDS AND
PLAY THE CARD GAME ALONG THE WAY ON YOUR WAY TO BECOMING A KAIJUDO
MASTER.
THE PLAY: THE GAME PLAY IS MUCH
CLEANER THAN ANY OF THE YU-GI-OH GAMES. THE ROLEPLAYING PART OF
THE GAME IS MUCH LIKE POKEMON. WHEN YOU GET TO THE DUELING ASPECT
OF THE GAME, IT ACTUALLY COMES TO LIFE BETTER THAN YU-GI-OH WITH THE
MONSTERS COMING TO LIFE ON THE FIELD.
OUR THOUGHTS: THIS IS PROBABLY
THE BEST ANIME RELATED GAME WE HAVE PLAYED ON ANY PLATFORM. ALSO
IF YOU PLAY MAGIC THEN YOU WILL BE ABLE TO PICK THIS GAME UP REAL QUICK.
THE GAME PLAY IS QUICK TO PICK UP AND OF COURSE FUN TO KEEP PLAYING.
OUR FINAL THOUGHTS ARE PICK THIS GAME UP. MOVE OVER YU-GI YOU
HAVE BEEN DETHRONED AS THE KING OF GAMES, LONG LIVE KING SHOBU!
WOTC TO RELEASE MARBLE COLLECTABLE GAME.

June 24, 2004
Wizards of the
Coast is preparing to launch a new kind of "collectible" game
based on one of the oldest collectibles around -- marbles.
Just as the collectible miniatures games followed the collectible
card game paradigm, so does WotC's new Marbloids, which
features 5 marbles plus a rules insert in every Marbloids
Booster Pack ($6.50 retail). There will be a total of 60
different Marbloids in the first series for fans to
collect, and of course there will be "Rare" and "Super Rare"
marbles so designated by the inclusion of silver and gold glitter
in their design. The WotC
Marbloids game is due out this fall and should appeal to a
young, pre-Magic, demographic.
